When Going To School Isn't To Learn The Golden Rule!

By: Benjamin Groff
We just got our property tax bill and the school tax portion more than doubled. My taxes went up approx.60+ percent. Way to screw us all Nadaburg!
In attempting to not make this the school newspaper throughout August information has poured in to Wittmann News concerning the mission that the Nadaburg Unified School District appears to be on and what it is costing tax payers during a period of what should be recovery and lean spending practices it appears it is spend baby spend when it comes to accommodating certain areas of the Nadaburg School.
The latest concern is increases in property taxes where Nadaburg Unified School District property owners are receiving notifications that their property taxes listed under the school tax portion seem to have sky rocketed like some sort of bad science project.
Who decided this? When did this happen? Why is this happening?
To answer those questions we rewind to a 2006 election where voters were asked if they felt a high school was needed in the Nadaburg Unified School District. This was before the real estate bubble burst and the sky appeared to be the limit. Many voters checked the ‘yes’ box thinking nothing of tax increases and of the nostalgia of a good ole Nadaburg High!
Two years forward and through a 2008 election the current sitting school board worked themselves into office and the progress has moved forward with the plans to build a high school. It has had a few setbacks but thanks to Surprise Mayor Lyn Pruitt and other entities it is expected that blue prints and survey teams will be out scouting and setting the markers for the new Nadaburg High School as soon as June of 2011 with completion a priority!
Before the bubble burst then Surprise City Council Person Lyn Pruitt voiced concern at a city council meeting that the properties in the Wittmann area were producing less than $1000 per home to the district (this rate tallied in taxes, volunteer support and other revenues unnoticeably funneled to the school) and at that rate there could not be sufficient support to create a school system that would attract developers to areas like the old Chrysler Proving Grounds and other intended areas where housing additions were planned. There had to be better schools and infrastructure for Surprise to move north with their plans besides the BNSF Rail Yard alone will bring thousands to the area it is estimated by 2018 and someone has to have a place for them to be attracted to and schools are a form of attraction when building a village.
Was the Tax Rate boosted in an executive session, did the board and Surprise City Council slip one pass the good citizens and property owners of Wittmann and those foreclosed properties which lay within the Nadaburg Unified School District?
However it happen there is one thing that can be certain and that is there are likely to be more surprises from such a city and school board or ‘governing body’ which has no oversight. This is a result of those who sit out an election. Who fail to pay attention to the school district because they do not have children or their children do not attend that particular district.
If happenings like this are to be kept from reoccurring then it’s vital to stay informed and alert your neighbor where they can be informed (i.e.: wittmannnews.com) and then send any information you find to the newsdesk@wittmannnews.com where we will gladly verify it and post it for others to know and form an active community. If you are attending meetings write a letter to the editor at the newsdesk@wittmannnews.com and let your voice be heard about what your take was so others can become more informed.
Thousands of residents cannot attend all the meetings of the Northwest Citizens Group, The Nadaburg Unified School District, The Wittmann Fire District and/or county supervisor meetings going on downtown Phoenix every day.
It is here where you can be a service to your community and then donate fifteen minutes of your time to fire off a letter to the Wittmann News (where your name will be withheld using only initials or nothing at all, as long as you respond from an active email account.) newsdesk@wittmannnews.com
Communications and methods to which others may be made aware of public concerns is an idea as old as Benjamin Franklin himself.

NO FENCE...JUST DRONES...
AND A WHOLE LOT OF BREWING...
Another dubious week in this country's immigration policy as a third Predator drone was added to patrol our shared border with Mexico.
The addition means that for the first time authorities will monitor the entire land border between the United States and Mexico.
The addition comes as part of the additional $600 million pledged by the Obama administration to beef up border security and as the immigration debate shows little sign of slowing down.
While many criticized the move by the administration as feeding into increased efforts to militarize the border and criminalize an entire population, taking a step back for a moment it begins to show some savvy politicking on the part of President Obama.
Many Republicans have gone on record saying that they will not even consider, let alone address, comprehensive immigration reform until there could be some guarantee of security along the border. With constant, unbroken surveillance, it would appear that the next move is up to the Republicans.
The Predator flights also come on the heels of a very specific attack at the nature of immigration reform that has taken shape so far. In addition to challenging, and largely winning that challenge, the constitutionality of Arizona's SB 1070, the administration has taken other very public steps to differentiate its approach from the approach of many on the right.
These steps include citing the federal challenge to Arizona's immigration law to international authorities that the administration is serious about human rights abuses. In a required report to the United Nations Human Rights Council, the State Department pointed to that challenge as proof of tangible efforts that are underway to protect human rights.
Needless to say Arizona GOP Gov. Jan Brewer is not pleased. She's called on Secretary of State Hillary Clinton to retract the reference to her state's immigration law and responded by challenging the federal government to secure the border. Secretary of State Clinton had no response and now the Predator drones are flying constant surveillance to fully enforce immigration laws.

"We appreciate the really dedicated volunteers who helped on the trails, in the visitor center and on special projects throughout the summer," said Marty Lawrence, preserve manager. The Preserves new season begins September 15 and we have several volunteer positions to fill. Volunteers are needed to work Saturday mornings as part of the organizations stewardship team clearing trails, removing invasive plants, repairing fences and maintaining buildings. Other volunteer positions needed throughout the week include visitor center host, trail docent, newsletter preparation and program planning. "We're totally dependent on volunteers, without a strong team of volunteers this special place simply wouldn't be available for visitors. A commitment of just 4-5 hours a month can make a huge difference in what we're able to accomplish." Said preserve manager Marty Lawrence. When most people think of "micro-giving" they think of sites like Kiva, DonorsChoose or GlobalGiving that allow your small donation to make a direct, personal impact… but what if the "micro-giving" concept was applied to random acts of kindness? That's the principle behind ItStartsWith.Us, a project created by Nate St. Pierre (though, Nate thinks they shouldn't be "random acts of kindness" but "directed acts of kindness"). The idea is simple. Sign up for a mailing list and each week you get sent a mission. One week the mission was the $2 challenge. Subscribers were encouraged to spend $2 in a way that would make a positive impact on someone else's life. For one person, this was helping a mom out at the grocery store who was a couple of dollars short on her bill. Other examples including paying someone's bridge toll and buying a kid a set of headphones on a flight. Other missions have involved helping out a stranger, giving something you owned to a friend, finding a senior citizen and spending some quality time with them, and handwriting a note to someone to let them know they were "doing it right." Nate says that one of the main reasons the concept works is because people know that they are part of a team and that others are out there doing the same thing. The ideas are quick, easy and fun and people are encouraged to tweet about them or report back to Nate with the results of what they did for the week. Video plays an important part in what Nate is doing with ItStartsWIth.Us. At least once a week, he records a video for the website and he encourages members to record videos to report on their mission. To Nate, videos allow the website members to realize that they are part of a team, and that he is just a regular guy making this all happen. In addition to the weekly missions, Nate has started a side project called the "Love Bomb" (I love this idea). Each week, someone from the ItStartsWith.Us community nominates someone outside the community going through a rough time -- they may have just been diagnosed with cancer, lost their job, or going through a bad breakup. The Love Squad "attacks" that person's blog (or email box) by sending positive comments at a specific time (usually on Thursday mornings). The person is flooded with positive comments. Nate is working to grow the ItStartsWith.Us community and is currently working with several companies on how they can implement the weekly mission challenge as a staff bonding tool. The companies can tailor the missions he sends to them to make the most impact in their communities, and once a quarter all of the companies involved will participate in a coordinated mission with the rest of the ItStartsWith.Us members. To learn more, visit the ItStartsWIth.Us website.

With Thoughts of Labor Day - A Forgotten Perspective
I chose to run for the NUSD governing school board because I have lived in the district for the past 3 years and feel that I can bring a broad perspective and objectivity to this position. I have managed large numbers of people in the business environment and have always been successful. The reason for my success has been an ability to work well as a member of a team to accomplish important tasks. It is of the highest priority for this district that we perform admirably as a cohesive unit that includes board members, district personnel, staff, teachers and community members. It is imperative that we establish effective and open communication across all areas, establishing and maintaining trust and common goals. One goal must be to provide a quality education to all children of our community. It is an obligation of our district to provide the teachers in our community with the necessary tools and training to adequately educate our children. I believe we should ensure that methods of accountability are in place, such that each member of our team understands his or her responsibility and that parents, children, teachers, administrators, staff and school board members can fulfill these responsibilities effectively. Another important goal of this district must be to responsibly manage and administer our tax dollars allocated to education. I have years of experience managing large budgets within the private sector. While I understand that school district budgets are somewhat different from private enterprise budgets, my experience in fiscal responsibility is a great strength. I will come to this job with an open mind and the objectivity necessary to perform all of the functions of a school board member. I am willing, eager in fact, to devote the time and energy that this community deserves in fulfilling my duties as a member of this board. LAS VEGAS -- Two Las Vegas Metro police officers are facing criminal charges following a pursuit in May that resulted in a man’s death. Officer Aron Carpenter has been charged with felony reckless driving and misdemeanor vehicular manslaughter. Officer Andrew Ubbens has been charged with misdemeanor reckless driving. Both men were in pursuit of 27-year-old Ivan Carrillo on the night of May 19. Investigators ruled that both officers disregarded multiple orders to stop the chase and even lied about their actions in full view of another officer. Carpenter’s police cruiser collided with Carillo’s vehicle near the intersection of Lone Mountain Road and Lamb Boulevard in North Las Vegas. Carrillo suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at University Medical Center. Ubbens will remain on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation. Carpenter has been placed on unpaid leave. Dear Wittmann News, Big news: Our petition to save net neutrality and stop the corporate takeover of our media just picked up its 100,000th signature! The big corporations who want to control the flow of information in America plan to bully Congress and the FCC into allowing mergers like Comcast/NBC and implementing the Google-Verizon "framework" that would undermine net neutrality. And they were counting on us to stay silent. Well, we haven't. To borrow a phrase from one of those big telecom companies: Can you hear us now? Good! But while 100,000 people is a lot, we're up against extremely well-funded opposition. That's why I need you to make a small contribution today to help us grow our grassroots movement. Last week, I spoke at a public hearing in Minneapolis. I warned that allowing corporations to control the Internet would not just threaten competition -- it would also stifle free speech. And at the end of the meeting, the two FCC commissioners in attendance announced that they were on board with our effort to save net neutrality. But I can't win this fight alone. I need every single one of the 100,000 people who have signed our petition. And I need their friends, too. You can Tweet or post to Facebook to get your friends on board. But you can also help us run online advertising to spread our message far and wide. We have a long and uphill battle ahead of us. But it's critical that we win it. And that's why it's critical that these 100,000 signatures be just the start of our movement. Thanks for your support, P.S. -- Seriously, I know there are a lot of folks asking for your dollars these days, but you are the only source of funds we have for this effort. Please consider making a contribution today!

DALLAS - A Texas appeals court says gay couples legally married in other states cannot divorce in Texas, where same-sex marriages are banned
The 5th Texas Court of Appeals ruled Tuesday that a Dallas judge didn't have jurisdiction to grant a divorce to two Dallas men who wed in Massachusetts. The court also says Texas' same-sex marriage ban is constitutional.

The state attorney general had appealed the district judge's October ruling that granted the men a divorce and found the ban violates equal rights guaranteed by the U.S. Constitution.
The Dallas men married in 2006 in Massachusetts and separated two years later. They're referred to only as J.B. and H.B. in court filings.
An attorney for J.B. says they haven't decided whether to appeal to the Texas Supreme Court.
But can it also bring us closer to the animal kingdom? David Rothenberg thinks so. Rothenberg is a professor of music and philosophy at the New Jersey Institute of Technology, and the author of a number of books, including Why Birds Sing and Thousand Mile Song. He's also an accomplished jazz clarinetist. His big idea? Not only can human beings use the animal kingdom's music to gain a greater understanding of the natural world, we can even make music with them. According to Rothenberg, music not only transcends language, it transcends species itself. Case in point: Rothenberg's 2005 cd, also titled Why Birds Sing. It's more than just sampled bird songs over a studio track — it's an actual collaboration, humans and birds playing and singing together in zoos and forests. Rothenberg suggests that the birds he records with listen and respond to the human musicians. It's an interspecies jam session of sorts. While the idea of human/animal music is nothing new, Rothenberg may be the first to tie together the threads of philosophy, musicology, and science, and examine animal songs through a serious philosophical lens. As Rothenberg explains it: Maybe, using music, we can reach across into the mind and the aesthetics and arts of a whole other kind of being, and have some kind of communication happen that is meaningful, in this mysterious way that music is meaningful. The key word is "communication," implying a conversation. And, in Rothenberg's mind, that's just what's happening. The music is collaborative, and the birds (or whales on another recording) are treated as fellow musicians, not merely part of the music or an extra track to add color and texture. As to the music itself, I'm not here to tell you what's good and what isn't — that's up to your aesthetic sense. It tends to be experimental-sounding, ranging from the traditional analog-sounding flute and clarinet to electronic sounds. You won't find as much of the formal musical structure that you might be used to. It's worth a listen and Sierra Club radio has a recent episode with some of the music, as well as an interview with Rothenberg. Whether the music itself is interesting or not is subjective, but there's no question that the philosophy behind Rothenberg's work is fascinating. Ask just about any musician, and they'll tell you that their craft is a universal language. A Beethoven sonata is a Beethoven sonata in Greek, Turkish, English, or Swahili. You can walk on stage in a jazz club anywhere in the world and sit in with the house band. Music transcends language; it fosters understanding between cultures that are often separated by language and custom.
